Difference Between Private Duty and Medical Care

Private Duty Care Vs. Home Health Care

As families become small and more adults continue to age, the demand for in-home healthcare increases. Most seniors today prefer staying in their own homes as they grow older and seek services that enable them to do so for as long as possible. Private duty and Home Health care aim to provide health care to seniors as they age, but both are significantly different.

Let us find out how!

Private Duty Care

Private Duty care aims to help senior adults remain independent and comfortable in their houses. This type of in-home care is for elderly individuals who need assistance with day-to-day activities. Private Duty aides usually assist with multiple tasks, including housing keeping, meal preparation, hospital visits, shopping, and offering companionship. A Private Duty aide can also provide respite care to relieve family members who regularly care for their loved ones. Since private duty doesn’t include medical or skilled care, it is not covered by Medicare and is typically paid for by the client.

Home Health Care

Home Health care services, on the other hand, are medically driven. A physician prescribes them to adults who require care by skilled nurses and other home health assistants. This type of care is typically covered by Medicare and may include healthcare specialists coming to the patient’s residence for 30 to 90 days. A physician coordinates these visits. Home health care is similar to a patient’s care in a hospital but is comparatively less expensive. Examples of home health care include intravenous or nutrition therapy, injections, wound care, monitoring severe illness, etc.
